The American Red Cross Celebrates 140 Years of Service

The American Red Cross celebrates 140 years of service, since Clara Barton first founded the organization, bringing vital support and resources to communities across the country in times of need.

The American Red Cross reflects back on its archives as it commemorates this anniversary, including parallels between the response to WWI and the influenza pandemic of 1918, and the COVID-19 pandemic 100 years later.

Among the similarities: the development of a Production Corp of volunteers who created surgical dressings, clothing, and face coverings for soldiers, veterans, and refugees after World War I, a tradition carried on with the creation of 130,000 masks for veteran and military hospitals and military bases around the world, during the current pandemic. Read more here.
